For areas with unstable decking (such as loose bricks and patio stones), it is recommended that pipe anchors be used to properly anchor the cover. Pipe anchors extend holding power of a regular screw-type anchor down 9 inches into the solid ground. (18 inch pipe anchor assembly is the most commonly used.)
Pipe anchors are aluminum tubes with a brass screw-type anchor permanently embedded into one end. Pipe anchors can be installed by pre-drilling a 7/8 inch hole into the ground and through loose bricks or patio stones when necessary. Place a block of wood over the top of the pipe anchor assembly (or use a rubber mallet) to gently tamp into place.
